Frequently Asked Questions
Liquid Ceramic costs a little more than twice that of an ordinary paint job. However, the higher upfront cost can certainly be justified because you may never have to paint your house again . . . . and due to it's thermal barrier, it'll keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter - saving you on energy usage.
Is it available in different colors? Liquid Ceramic can be professionally tinted to virtually any fade resistant color. Accent colors are available for your trim as well.
Liquid Ceramic will bond to just about every surface imaginable! Every type of wood, including stained cedar, masonite, vinyl, aluminum and brick surfaces have been coated with excellent results.

Who can apply Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coating? It is applied only by trained applicators in the Liquid Ceramic dealership network. Special equipment is necessary to apply the product so it will look great on your home or building.
Does a primer need to be applied before Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coating is applied? Sometimes. Liquid Ceramic is self priming, which saves labor. However, oil based paints (whether on the top surface or below the top surface), stained cedar siding and unpainted wood as well as most metal surfaces, will require primer.
Is the product useful in underwater applications? We do not recommend our products for underwater surfaces. This is a specialty coating area which we are not involved.
How cold can it get before it begins to chip off? We don't know the limit. We have had it below 40° below Fahrenheit (without wind chill) with no failure.
Exactly how well does it seal out moisture and mold? Moisture vapor, like air, can be breathed into Liquid Ceramic because of its high perm rate. With this high rate though, moisture will not "rest" inside the product as air flow continues. Therefore, mold and mildew have a very hard time growing on the product.
Will Liquid Ceramic tint to any color? Almost. We don’t recommend tinting to extremely dark colors, because the strong tint-to-product ratio may cause a breakdown in the performance of the product. (However, this is true of most paints in general. The more a product is tinted, the less the product will perform like it was intended to do.)
Is there a national organization that gives its “stamp of approval” to Liquid Ceramic? The Master Painters Institute (MPI) is dedicated to the establishment of quality standards and quality assurance in the architectural painting and coating application industries. It’s origin goes back to the year 1890. Liquid Ceramic is on the Approved List of Products issued by the Master Painters Institute.
Once applied, what does the final job look like? Beautiful! Once Liquid Ceramic is applied, it has the same curb appeal as a high quality paint, but it will last and last, unlike most paints. View some results on our gallery page.
Does it have any true waterproofing qualities? Yes. Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coating stops water penetration but breathes at one of the highest rates in the industry. EIFS stucco will breath at somewhere between 20 and 24. Liquid Ceramic has a breathability perm rate of 20. This is perfect and necessary for painting these types of substrates.
What other products are available? Liquid Ceramic is available as an exterior wall coating and an interior wall coating. We also have products within the Liquid Ceramic Permanent Coating System including roof coatings, primers, sealers and bonding agents. See more on this on our technical data page.
What type of finish is Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coating available in? Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coating is available only in a semi-gloss finish which will allow ease of cleaning with a simple garden hose.
Okay, this sounds great, but what proof do you have that Liquid Ceramic has an R-24 value? In 1995, Warnock-Hersey, one of the world’s largest testing organizations, did an evaluation of the product. Special chambers were built and the product was tested against six inches of fiberglass batting (R-24). Test results indicated that Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coating showed the same resistance to heat and cold transfer as the R-24 batting. Hence Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coating has an "insulation equivalency" of R-24. A copy of this test is available for you to review upon request.
What type of warranty is on this product? We provide a straight forward warranty that states it will not crack, peel, flake or chalk for as long as the homeowner lives in the house, or, if the house is sold, for a period of twenty (20) years from the date of the original installation. Unlike our competition, we also supply a full lifetime labor warranty for as long as the homeowner lives in the home. If anything goes wrong we'll fix it for free. Nobody can beat our guarantee.
Why is the ISO 9002 designation for Liquid Ceramic so important? A lot of companies speak about “quality control” and “laboratory testing” in their literature, but the highest level of assurance a company can give the public about its quality control is through an ISO designation. Typically, an independent auditor is assigned by the ISO organization to review the manufacturing process. In the instance of Liquid Ceramic, this auditing process is handled by KPMG, one of the world’s largest accounting firms. Twice each year, the manufacturer is “re-certified” in accordance with the standards that have been established in producing Liquid Ceramic .
I have a brick home. What would the advantages be in coating my home with Liquid Ceramic? First, it will beautify the home. Second, even though brick is an insulator itself, it absorbs quite a bit of the sun’s UV rays over the day and at night, when you want your home cool, the heat continues to release itself into your home, causing your air conditioner to continue to stay on. Most likely, you’d want to coat the brick with a white or beige color because of its appeal, however, as with any paint or coating, the lighter the color, the more reflectant the sun’s rays. If you don’t want to coat the brick, you can still coat all trim areas, which will lower your long term painting costs.
I have a beach home also. Does Liquid Ceramic hold up on beachfront areas? Yes. The product was developed in the Pacific Northwest where buildings and homes are subjected to harsh weather. It is ideal as a coating for homes near the beach where it is resistant to high winds, salty air and the effects of wind-blown sand.
Does Liquid Ceramic have competition? Liquid Ceramic Exterior Wall Coat stands alone in terms of high performance architectural coatings. No other company can match its unique formula. However, we do see a number of “copy cat” products emerging into the marketplace. Other products have little or no ceramic content which is our central selling point. There are a multitude of coatings with vinyl and other plastics as the main ingredient, but these don’t provide as much, if any, insulation value as Liquid Ceramic . Most paint manufacturers claim to have a “premium” brand but put up against Liquid Ceramic, there really is no competition. Also, there have been many companies entering the market with “Liquid This” or “Liquid That” paint. Only our company holds the trademark and use of the name “Liquid Ceramic.” We have the 40-year product experience (history) and the ASTM testing that support our claims.
How can I compare my product to the “copy-cats"? Ask the following questions: a) is it R-24 insulation tested? If so, by whom. Ask to see a copy of the lab test; b) does it have a Perm Rate of 20? Ask to see the lab test; c) has it been around for 40 years? Has the product been “on buildings or homes” for 40 years? (In most cases, you’ll find copy-cat manufacturers have only been applying their product to homes for one to two years!)
What about other “ceramic-filled” paints? There are other ceramic-filled paints on the market, however, none have the history that Liquid Ceramic has. Although this ceramic additive may add some insulating factor to the existing paint, it does nothing to increase the breathability, durability and bonding characteristic. Original Liquid Ceramic possesses all of these features. Adding ceramic powders or particulate to paint will also void the paint manufacturer’s warranty.
If this product is so great, how is it that we’ve never heard of it before? The product was developed in Canada by a company that was concerned with the deteriorating effect weather was having on the homes and buildings in their region. Although it can be used to offer significant insulating and durability in virtually all other geographic areas, Liquid Ceramic was never marketed strongly in the United States, until now.
